2022.01.18 16:58 REGGA_TRONIC issues with USB mic sometimes not "working" at boot until re-plugging

every so often, i keep encountering this minor but annoying issue where my USB microphone (Blue Yeti) doesn't fully work following a (re)boot until i unplug and re-plug it.
i'm using pulseaudio as the audio server.
the mic gets detected and shows up in the list of ALSA/pulseaudio input devices; that is to say, it shows up as a USB device in lsusb and i can see it in pavucontrol as the selected/default device, but in the event that this happens, it won't actually input audio to the system until i physically disconnect and reconnect the mic, at which point things work normally (i.e. pavucontrol doesn't show the input level meter moving even if i'm talking into the mic).
this seems more likely to happen after a (warm) reboot where it occurs almost every time, during a cold boot i'd say the issue occurs maybe 25% of the time. the mic works fine with no issues on the other OSes i have tested (windows 10 on the same machine, as well as macOS on a different machine) so i don't believe it's a hardware issue with the mic or this machine, nor is this a new issue (that is to say, i've been having this issue since i started using arch on this machine).
the only thing i've changed in my pulseaudio config from the defaults was to disable loading the cork module in /etc/pulse/default.pa (since i had issues with some voice chat programs muting music playback).
i'm curious to know if anyone else has encountered this or would happen to have any other suggestions that might resolve the problem. i'm almost to the point of writing a script to try unbinding and rebinding the snd-usb-audio driver shortly after boot to simulate the USB unplug/replug but i'd love to at least attempt to figure out a "proper" solution before resorting to such a hack.

2022.01.18 16:58 tameshrewd Debating getting a kindle

Hello good people. I recently got a new job with a train commute so thinking about a kindle but having trouble convincing myself since I have an old iPad I use for work which I can also use to read. What makes a kindle worth it in your eyes?
For context, I’m a huge bookworm and also read fanfic. Reading is a big part of my job too (though more boring documents for work!), so ideally need to be able to switch between “real” books, webpages and work documents/PDFs.

2022.01.18 16:58 aeva6754 An Engineer's Playstyle

I am a process engineer, veteran, programmer, and a project manager - and this is how I play The Long Dark.
Being a bit OCD in regards to efficiency, militancy, and organization, I've attempted to streamline my survival playthrough and thought maybe you all might find it interesting/inspiring for your own. The following outlines my playstyle from start to finish. I have not been able to finish a run through yet, but I always enjoy it.

Great Bear was not just a self-sufficient mining town - it was in fact a remote military base working on a secret government project. During the last war, the island was heavily damaged by bombers, and the project was shut down. Now, classified information on several computers across the island must be destroyed before the island is discovered. Once all information is secure, the island will need to be prepped for new residents, and a complete map of the current state of things will be needed.
An elite paratrooper, trained to withstand the pain of extreme temperature drops, starvation, dehydration, and combat with wildlife, has been dropped high above the island and could land almost anywhere.
An additional complication has arisen. It seem when the former residents evacuated, many surviving dogs were left behind. After cleaning the island of edible trash, these dogs seem to have interbred with the local timberwolf population and produced a mangy, feral hybrid with little fear of humans. Now that most of the accessible foods have been eaten, they will be extremely aggressive. Unfortunately, we cannot commission animal control.

CODE: +j4z-E8Uw-PLOa-b5gw-PeMl (last letter was a straight line... could be one, i, or lowercase L)
I like to start off with random weather patterns and a random time of day. 4x Time multiplier for the longest possible days and nights. I turn on all ailments and and conditions with exception for parasites (I don't like the idea that you can get parasites from cooked meat... I don't think that should happen if you cook meat correctly, correct me if I'm wrong though) and cabin fever. I don't get why cabin fever is a thing but i understand some people might like the challenge. As for wildlife, I set all herbivores to very high and all carnivores to low and put the respawn time so it takes a long time for them to come back. I put wolf fear at "high" so attacks don't last long, but I also put condition damage from attacks at high as well. So they are quick fights but can be damaging. I've considered turning off the black wolves i call "feral dogs", but I believe it might impact long term survival simply due to the fact that you can exchange some knife condition, a bandage and some antiseptic for a bunch of wolf meat, and that seems like a good deal (so far). I also turn resources up high and a high chance of items spawning outside of containers. I don't use rest as a resource because soldiers can sleep almost anywhere anytime. Being constantly active really takes it out of you and when you're at that level of survival mode your body will definitely sleep as much as you let it. Start your character with high resources to give them the best chance at finishing the mission (unlikely). I start in a random region and attempt to reach Mystery Lake as my headquarters for reasons I will divulge later.

I have a few goals/rules when I play.

  1. Keep Military Bearing (see below)
  2. Survival via the Critical Six Starter Goals (see below)
  3. Find the Core Tools (see below)
  4. Recover All Data from computers
  5. Map Great Bear (all regions, all locations)
  6. Clean up Great Bear (collect and organize all resources from all regions and locations - wood, metal, cloth, everything) Map and clean all regions and buildings, being sure to organize resources at central locations. Mark these outposts on the map with a "Materials" symbol. Use 'X's to mark all other buildings that are cleaned and ready for new residents. Designate one location as "Headquarters" with a Fire Symbol. Expect to relocate all resources to this location during the final days of your mission.

As a former military member I understand the value of keeping your equipment and surroundings in outstanding shape. I've imposed some of these ideals and tactics into my own personal set of rules:
  1. FIRE. Unless under dire need, firestarting should be reserved for sunny days using the maglense. If travelling, carry a torch and periodically start a fire with your torch with a few sticks. Make a new torch and continue carrying the flame as long as possible. If no other fire starting methods are available, you will need to stay moving until proper ignition methods are secured.
  2. UNIFORM. Keep all tools and uniform over 90% condition whenever possible. Any item that falls below 25% should be replaced until it can be properly mended.
  3. CAMPS. Ensure key locations are supplied with fuel, water, and food before leaving.
  4. KNIVES. Always carry a knife or hatchet if no knives are available. Knives are only for wolves and wolves are to be fought only with knives. Flares, stones, and torches can be used to prevent attacks, but ammo is not to be wasted on wolves unless health is under 50%. Once the fight is over, every effort should be made to follow the tracks and harvest the kill. Most wolf fights will happen unexpectedly so always be prepared to track and harvest at any moment.
  5. ARROWS. Arrows are to used for deer and bears unless starving with no other food sources. Preserve firearms and ammunition for moose and timberwolves. If possible, steer herbivores into the path of wolves to save ammunition. Deer and bears with both bleed out eventually.
  6. AMMO. Ammunition can (and should) be used liberally when hunting moose. They do not bleed out, so it is recommended to use one rifle shot at long distance and then change to revolver. If possible, fire just outside a hunter's blind or other building to lure the animal in with a charge and then duck inside as it gets closer. Ammunition should also be used when in direct contact with timberwolves. Wait for a wolf to stand its ground and try to get a headshot with the revolver.

The first and foremost is to get the basics in order. Focus is key here to making it through the first few days in Ash Canyon or really anywhere. If there's a cattail or a stick on the ground in your way, sure, grab it, but get right back on course after that. Don't stop moving until you have found at least temporary solutions to the 6 Criticals. (Five of these are actually known as the real life '5C' Survival Schema):
  1. Combustion (fire)
  2. Containers (water)
  3. Cover (clothing and bedding)
  4. Calories (not one of the 5C's but it should be)
  5. Cutters (knife, hatchet, or hacksaw)
  6. Cordage (sewing kit, fishing tackle, or cured guts)

In order of priority. With these six tools and some common sense, you can survive indefinitely. Find them, maintain them, and they will keep you alive.
  1. MagLense (invulnerable, infinite fire)
  2. Lantern (repairable, refillable, inifinite light)
  3. Toolbox (repairable, required for other tools)
  4. Hacksaw (repairable, infinte wood and carcass harvesting)
  5. Cooking Pot (repairable, infinite water)
  6. Heavy Hammer (repairable, infinite knives and ice fishing)

Attempts should be made to gather and preserve these limited resources as much as possible. In this environment, these are gold.
  1. Cloth - required for knives and clothing repairs.
  2. Metal - required for fish hooks, knives, and repairs to core tools.
  3. Saplings - required for bows and arrows.
  4. Reishi Mushrooms - required for antibiotics as needed. If antibiotic pills are not available, always have one pre-made Reishi Tea in inventory.
  5. Lichen (Old Man's Beard) - required for the antiseptic treatment of wounds that are nearly guaranteed when facing off against the islands wildlife.
  6. "Variety" - the spice of life. All attempts shoudl be made to preserve variety. Eat the meat first. Wear self-made clothing. Use arrows when available, and avoid recycling unique clothing items if at all possible. You never know when you might need a new pair of boots or pants.

- I use Mystery Lake as a headquarters because of the quick access to fish and game, as well as a forge (follow the tracks through forlorn muskeg, then keep left at the end and stay off the ice). I haven't yet experimented enough to know if Blackrock or Bleak Inlet would be better suited to reach the milling machine and ammo workbench, but right now I'm leaning more towards Blackrock because of the timberwolves and obstacle course required in BI (not ideal).

- I don't particulary like calling the black dogs that roam around the game "wolves". I prefer to think of them as feral dogs as that seems more likely given the way they behave and the fact that they bark (wolves do not bark). The timberwolves are an awesome addition.

For those who have/had diarrhea and/or loose stools as a symptom and quit, how long did it take you to finally get over it?
My symptoms have gotten much better for the most part, but I’ve been clean for a month now and am still experiencing some pretty uncomfortable bowel issues that are unpredictable and inconsistent.
